Automotive Video Searches Achieve Triple Digit Growth in 2008
Google recently reported that despite a slowdown in the automotive sector in the US, consumers are increasingly searching and viewing online video content to obtain information on cars. According to the study released from Google, “searches for specific vehicle brand names coupled with the term “video” have risen 237 percent over the past year.”
“These numbers are only going to increase. Consumers are time starved and video provides the most amount of information in the shortest amount of time,” said new media consultant Gregory Smith.
The study was collected from a survey conducted on 780 new vehicle shoppers as well as analytics analysis.
In addition to viewing videos of vehicles, according to the Google study, more than 40% of shoppers who are in the market for a vehicle watched automotive videos online prior to a vehicle purchase.
Study respondents stated 3 principal reasons as to why they watch online video to evaluate their new vehicle purchase options:
 |
1. View vehicles under consideration |
 |
2.
Learn more about the car specifications |
 |
3. Obtain an overall review |
“We have seen a huge increase in interactive video orders at Realview TV Automotive with Porsche, Honda, Jeep, Nissan and BMW all embracing video,” said Darren Starr, Vice President—Automotive Channel at Realview TV.
As to why new vehicle shoppers may be more inclined to view videos than other types of shoppers, Darren said “car buying is an emotional experience and consumers want to get as much information as possible before going to a dealership. No other medium can offer the experience and information that consumers want.”
